David Rose, Hanbury House 1940 to 1944, was in wonderful spirits when Jo Slater from the school's Alumni Office arrived at his care home in Malvern to present him with a very special 100th birthday card and gift on behalf of the school, joined by his daughter, grandson and 11-year-old great granddaughter.
Looking through items that Jo had selected from the school's archive records, including David's 1st XI cricket team from 1942, the whole school roll of 1941 and the Prefects and Masters photograph from 1944, David shared vivid memories of school life in the 1940s. His recollections were remarkably sharp, including stories of Pluggy Warner and the Headmaster’s punishment for having “broken bounds” to play billiards in town: "I might have received my punishment from Spike, but he also told me I was a pretty good billiards player!"

David also enjoyed seeing how the school has evolved, exploring today’s campus through a 360-degree virtual tour; it was a very special moment as David reminisced on the past and delighted in seeing how the school has developed to today.
It was a very special visit, with David reflecting on friendships, experiences and opportunities that helped shape the wonderful life he has built in the many decades since.
Jo Slater: "We are incredibly proud to celebrate our alumni community, and it was a very special honour to vcelebrate such a significant milestone with David, and members of his family."
A few days later a special birthday party was held in David's honour with his family all there to celebrate and present him with gifts including some cricket memorabilia, alongside his Royal birthday card. It was a wonderful day with many stories told by David about his life, prompted by the old photographs and videos that were displayed.
