Creative Journeys: RBSA Photography Prize 2025

Talented Old Trident and Trent College Art Technician Charlie is making her mark in the art world with striking photography featured in Birmingham gallery.

Charlie Valentine (class of 2017)

We are delighted for Trent College Art Technician and Old Trident Charlie Valentine (class of 2017) whose photographs ‘Abandoned Trade’ and ‘Bronco’ are exhibiting, until 22 March 2025, at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, as part of the RBSA Photography Prize 2025.

Charlie explains her Artist Statement for each image:

Abandoned Trade
(Old Cattle Market, Nottingham 2024)
Medium: 35mm Analogue Photograph

An abandoned white van, the staple of British tradesmen, alone on the Old Cattle Market plot, the space now filled with left over remnants of the locals that pass by.

Abandoned Trade, 2024, part of the series ‘Nottingham: Urban Decline’, highlights the issues of underfunding in inner-city Nottingham. Documenting the decline of local spaces once integral to community and commerce, which now stand abandoned and overlooked. Emphasizing the city’s rapid loss of commerce in Nottingham’s urban landscape, whilst showcasing beauty in the subtle charms of run-down British suburbs.

Bronco
(Alcudia, Mallorca, 2024)
Medium: 35mm Analogue Photograph

A gaze through the wire – soft yet unbroken. A horse’s eye, framed by a chain link fence, an unwavering presence.

Standing in quiet defiance to the confines of its enclosure, Bronco, 2024 is a moment of stillness and of resilience.

The work addresses the relationship between captivity and freedom. Evoking empathy and introspection, an unblinking eye encourages viewers to consider unseen constraints that shape their own lives.  Even behind barriers, the horse feels untamed - a reminder of the quiet strength required to transcends the constraints of life.

Charlie inspires in her role at Trent College as Art Technician, supporting the department and assisting students from those who are just discovering their own artistic flair to those who are developing and achieving amazing pieces for their GCSE and A Level courses.
