Trent College has received a special commemorative sword in honour of Old Trident Captain Elizabeth (Lizzie) Godwin (Class of 2015), whose achievements made history in the British Army.

Donated by Pooley Sword (formerly Wilkinson Sword), the sword has been commissioned as the Elizabeth Godwin Sword and will become a permanent part of the school’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF).

Lizzie made history in 2020 when she became the first woman to commission into The Life Guards, the British Army’s senior regiment within the Household Cavalry. The role had only opened to women in 2017. A commemorative sword has also been donated to The Life Guards in her memory.

The beautifully detailed sword features the King’s Cipher on its handguard and blade, alongside the crests of the Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Marines and British Army, as well as the Trent College crest. Its dedication reads: The Elizabeth Godwin Sword, Trent College Combined Cadet Force, Sword of Honour.

The sword will be securely mounted and displayed at school before taking on a special annual role. Each year, it will be presented to the overall best cadet at the CCF Annual Awards Presentation.  Contingent Commander, Sqdn Ldr Miriam Watson, said:

“We are beyond honoured to receive this sword, to commemorate the life of Captain Godwin. It will now be awarded to the cadet who best embodies the qualities that Captain Godwin displayed in abundance.”

Through this lasting tribute, Lizzie’s name and legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Trent College cadets, recognising not only her remarkable achievements but also the qualities of leadership, commitment and service that the award seeks to celebrate.
