Arboretum Tour with David Pinney – A Special Final Year
Former Teacher and Head of Biology (1973–2004), David Pinney, has been sharing his knowledge and passion for the Trent College Arboretum for almost 50 years. As David celebrates his 80th year, this season marks his final year of leading tours; a special opportunity to experience the arboretum through the insight of someone who has helped generations appreciate its remarkable collection.
With the first trees planted over 150 years ago, the Trent College Arboretum is considered one of the finest in the East Midlands and among the most distinguished school arboretums in the country. Its characterful spinneys are set across the 45-acre campus, including the much-loved OT Spinney, named in honour of Old Tridents.
Over decades of careful development, the arboretum has grown to include hundreds of trees from around 200 species, including a number of rare and notable varieties. David’s enthusiasm and depth of knowledge bring these trees to life, offering fascinating insights into their history, significance and place within the school’s heritage.
David continues to give his time generously as a volunteer, and is delighted to share the arboretum with those who enjoy learning more about the natural world and the stories held within the landscape.
The tour content is primarily designed for an adult audience, although interested children are very welcome. The tour will take place whatever the weather, so please come suitably prepared.
Donations from the tour support classroom resources, tree planting and grounds care at Nyacaba Primary School and Gowan Mt. View Academy in Kenya, partner schools that Trent College has proudly supported for over 20 years.
Join us in celebrating David’s extraordinary contribution and in enjoying the beauty and heritage of the arboretum he has championed for half a century.
